This is the surface in front of the beginning of the large collapse area in the south wall; consequently there are many large rocks laying on the surface but also many rocks in the fill. Some rocks are so large that they are just not too heavy to be removed. Many of the smaller ones are used behind the wooden ground beam of the first ‘A’ support. This is to create a new horizontal step over step 36. Many stones, means less soil and removing this lot went rather fast.
Not only many stones but also many fragments of burnt mud-brick were found in this layer. The strip close to the south wall with the wooden vertical supports is left for the last moment, to prevent an early collapse.
